Won a Special Jury Award for his 1973 short A Field of Honor at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Second Annual Student Film Awards.
Made his feature-film directing debut in 1978 with the Beatles-themed comedy I Wanna Hold Your Hand.
Helmed the wildly successful Back to the Future trilogy.
Was nominated for Best Director at the 1988 Directors Guild Awards for the live-action/cartoon hybrid Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and won in 1994 for Forrest Gump.
Received the Saturn Awards' George Pal Memorial Award in 1994.
Made What Lies Beneath (2000) while waiting for Tom Hanks to lose weight in the middle of filming Cast Away.
